Markström is a tall goaltender that has the ability to look even bigger in net. He is a skilled goaltender with great mental strength as one of his major characteristics. He is cool, yet intensely competitive. Markstrom plays the butterfly style with a good glove and has fine positioning and agility in net. Although he struggled with rebound control and reactions to game speed in the early part of his first season in North America, Markstrom had been adjusting and improving in those areas before his injury.
Markstrom is clearly the top goaltending prospect in Florida’s organization. During the offseason, Florida signed veteran goaltender Jose Theodore, presumably to fight for the number one spot with the Panthers, but cannot be considered the long-term solution. Markstrom will have another year in the AHL to add more seasoning to his game, recover fully from his knee injury, and prepare for his upcoming role as the Panthers goaltender of the future.
